Somnium Navigatio
The island of Levania is hard to reach from our Earth. But when an opening appears, the passage becomes possible — at great risk to any human who ventures through. In Somnium, written in 1608, astronomer Johannes Kepler describes the dream of a journey to a moon he calls Levania, located in a parallel dimension inside dreams and inhabited by creatures of a phantasmagorical science fiction. His drawings of stellar models and orbital diagrams merge science and fantasy.
Somnium Navigatio is an immersive audiovisual performance exploring a historical range of algorithmic image-generation techniques, to navigate abstractly through the space-time of Somnium. What would these visions have looked like if Kepler had had our graphic and sound technologies?
