Biography

Julia Suero began playing the piano at the age of ten, then studied at the Centre for Advanced Studies in Contemporary Music in Buenos Aires (classical piano and composition). She soon turned to experimental music-making: first home studios, first compositions. From 1998 to 2000 she studied music therapy at the University of Buenos Aires.
After moving to France in 2003, she studied musicology up to a research Master’s on improvised music in Aix-en-Provence, focusing on the music of double bassist Joëlle Léandre and the relationship between improvised language and sound matter. She joined the GRIM improvised music collective in Marseille, led by Jean-Marc Montera, and took part in workshops with Rhys Chatham and Butch Morris. In 2014, in La Rochelle, she spent two years deepening her practice of electroacoustic composition at the Conservatoire with Patrick Ascione.
Since 2009 she has developed a body of work that combines improvisation, song, electronic and electroacoustic music, rooted in research on sound matter. Since 2010 she has worked with dance, theatre and circus companies and with visual artists, and composes for film, including a documentary for Korean television. She also performs live, notably with Pampa Sonica.
Alongside her artistic work, she leads arts education projects in primary and secondary schools. Since 2017 she has taught at La Rochelle University (DPAN Master’s) and the University of Limoges (Sensory Web Design Master’s); since 2021 she has co-led an audio fiction workshop with Héloïse Martin at La Rochelle University’s student centre.
