The Memory Machine
The starting point of this installation is the way childhood memories come back to us through photography. A photo freezes a moment that was once alive; it does not preserve our memories, which are tied to sensations — touch, hearing, smells, tastes. The artist layers fabrics onto which she projects video archives.
For the sound composition, I worked with sound archives and interviews about the childhood memories of people from Mississippi. The composition follows the logic of the video-on-fabric installation: a non-linear construction that brings out certain words and sounds, with materials juxtaposed and distorted, the way memory is built.
