Pink Matters
Pink will be their colour. Not the pink of well-behaved little girls — the pink of a loud, queer, punk uprising: an incantatory oratorio for five female voices, surrounded by the audience. Their weapons? Microphones and an artwork (A Shy Girl) shaped like an inflatable tank, pink and furry, designed by Chinese artist Xinhan Yú.
Continuing their research on power and cultural identity, choreographers Christophe Béranger and Jonathan Pranlas-Descours sign a striking, immersive new piece. Pink Matters brings together five women who let us see and hear different voices and bodily states, shaped by the vulnerable forces of our individual and shared histories. Spoken words and stories turn into songs, then dances, cries and incantations to gather our cracked bodies and rise together.
To rise, to arm oneself, to stand tall… in an anxious, turbulent present, these actions shrink our imaginations instead of giving common meaning to the struggles that drive and distinguish us. Can we find other ways to turn our constraints into a playground? To desacralise our struggles? To chant the words that confine us?
Pink Matters immerses the audience in a 360° set-up around an interactive work, in testimonies and live songs that tell a new history of gender. The performers move beyond the binary view of the world and make the body a site of resistance, opening a dialogue on resilience, peace and the undeniably hybrid nature of our world.
